From discarded nylon powder to organic forms, the Hot Wire Extensions process breathes new life into industrial waste. Guided by electric currents, a simple nichrome wire becomes a framework, around which material grows—like vines entwining a tree. Each pulse of heat transforms unused 3D printing powder into solid, bone-like structures—an alchemy of waste and ingenuity.

Rooted in sustainability and driven by curiosity, this method embodies more than design; it’s a gesture of transformation. In this film, we invite you to witness the choreography of material, energy, and imagination—an exploration of how discarded fragments become objects of wonder.

Hot Wire Extensions is a design studio based in Switzerland, led by designer and material researcher Fabio Hendry. Exploration and sustainability are central to its philosophy, and the Hot Wire Extensions process is conceived with these principles in mind. Utilizing waste SLS 3D nylon powder—a material that is currently not recycled—and drawing inspiration from the way a vine grows around a tree, the studio repurposes this material to create organic, bone-like structures built around a wire. Hot Wire Extensions designs and develops a diverse range of products, furniture, and installations, as well as bespoke commissions, all characterized by a dedication to the mindful exploration of new material landscapes.
